About Writing Gooseberry

Hi, I’m Michael Gallagher, author of two historical novels, The Bridge of Dead Things and The Scarab Heart, which chart the fortunes of a young Victorian materializing medium named Lizzie Blaylock.

I’m about to follow in the footsteps of the great Wilkie Collins, whose novel The Moonstone was first serialized in weekly installments nearly a hundred and fifty years ago. This summer I will be writing and publishing Gooseberry, a follow-up to The Moonstone that will reprise many of its characters, in weekly installments on Goodreads. Click on the link below if you’d like to read it.

This blog is where I’ll share my thoughts and feelings on that process: the traumas and the triumphs of writing a novel on the hoof. Whatever happens in the following weeks, whether this venture succeeds or ultimately fails, I’d love to have you along for the ride.

Michael Gallagher

Michael Gallagher’s Gooseberry is serialized in weekly installments every Friday from July 4th 2014 on Goodreads. Michael Gallagher is the author of The Bridge of Dead Things and The Scarab Heart, as well as the popular non-fiction title Why the Victorians Saw Ghosts.

All the photographs used on this blog are by John Thomson, except for the portrait of Wilkie Collins by Napoleon Sarony and the portrait of Michael Gallagher by Malane Whillock.
